Motherhood: The Math Finally Makes Sense

I saw a post about how math prepared us for motherhood, and my first thought was, Huh? What does math have to do with raising kids?

Then it clicked.

All those years of calculating what time we needed to leave for football practice, basketball games, dance recitals, and school events. Factor in picking up another kid, stopping at the store, and the one child who couldn’t find their shoes, and suddenly I was solving math problems

If practice starts at 5:30, it’s 20 minutes away, we have to pick up two kids, stop for gas, and somebody needs a poster board for a project that’s due tomorrow, what time do we leave?

Yesterday. The answer is yesterday.

I spent years doing mental math while driving, cooking dinner, and yelling at somebody to get in the car. And somehow, we usually made it on time. But let’s be fair… most of arriving on time was Dennis having us get there 30 minutes early!

So yes, I suppose math did prepare me for motherhood. But after raising my kids, I still haven’t found a single occasion where I needed algebra!
