I’ve watched people do this my entire life. They get mad at a job, a boss, a coworker, a friend, or even family and decide they are DONE. So they quit without notice. Say everything they’ve been wanting to say. Slam the door behind them and feel GREAT about it... For about five minutes.
Here’s the problem. You don’t know where life is going to take you.
That boss you just told off might be the person somebody calls for a reference three years from now. That coworker you couldn’t stand might end up working somewhere you desperately want a job. The person you decided you’d “never need again” might know exactly the person you need someday. Those are RESOURCES.
And I’m not saying you should keep toxic people in your life or stay somewhere you’re miserable. Sometimes you absolutely SHOULD walk away. Just don’t set the damn bridge on fire while you’re crossing it.
Give notice when you can. Finish what you committed to. Return what belongs to someone else. Pay what you owe. Say thank you for the opportunities you were given. And sometimes—this is the hard one—keep your mouth SHUT.
You don’t have to say everything you’re thinking just because you’re leaving. That’s not being fake. That’s being smart. Your reputation follows you a lot farther than you think. People remember the person who showed up, kept their word, worked hard, and handled themselves correctly even when they were pissed off. They also remember the person who didn’t.
And here’s something else people forget: Resources aren’t just about what somebody can do FOR YOU. Be a resource yourself. Help people. Share what you know. Answer the phone. Give someone a name or number when you can help connect them. Be the person somebody is glad they know. Because relationships work both ways.
You spend years making deposits into your Resource Bank. Your reputation, relationships, knowledge, connections, and integrity all go into it. Don’t empty the damn thing over one bad day. You never know when life is going to bring you right back to a bridge you were absolutely positive you’d never need to cross again.
