The WORST time to start building resources is when you desperately need them.
You lose your job and suddenly start calling people you haven’t spoken to in ten years.
You need a contractor TODAY, but you’ve never bothered to remember the names people recommended.
You need a reference, but you walked out of your last three jobs pissed off.
You need help, but you haven’t exactly been available when anybody else needed you.
Now suddenly your house is on fire and you’re looking around asking:
WHO CAN I CALL?
That’s why you build your Resource Bank BEFORE you need it.
Keep relationships. Save names and phone numbers. Pay attention when someone recommends a good person. Keep your résumé current. Learn new skills. Maintain your credit. Protect your reputation. Help people when YOU are in a position to help.
Basically, make deposits while life is GOOD.
Because resources aren’t something you magically create during a crisis.
And this doesn’t mean walking around thinking, What can this person do for me someday?
That’s USING people.
There’s a difference.
You build genuine relationships. You help people. You share what you know. You do good work. You keep your word. And along the way, you naturally build a network of people, knowledge, skills, and experience.
Then when life eventually throws you one of those OH SHIT moments—and it will—you’re not starting from zero.
You already have somewhere to turn.
That’s the whole point of a Resource Bank.
Make the deposits before you need to make a withdrawal.
