THE RESOURCE BANK — Your Reputation Is a Resource

One of the most valuable resources you’ll ever have doesn’t cost you a dime.

Your NAME.

Because whether you realize it or not, people talk.

Someone asks, “Do you know somebody who could do this?”

And your name either comes up…

or it doesn’t.

And if it DOES come up, what comes after your name?

“She’s dependable.”

“She’ll show up.”

“She knows what she’s doing.”

“If she tells you she’ll do it, she’ll do it.”

Or is it…

“Ehhh…I wouldn’t.”

THAT matters.

Your reputation is built in little pieces over YEARS.

Show up when you say you will. Do what you agreed to do. Pay people what you owe them. Return phone calls. Admit when you screwed up. Don’t lie to get yourself out of something. If you make a commitment, KEEP IT.

None of those things are impressive by themselves.

But do them consistently and people learn something about you:

Your word means something.

And that becomes a resource.

It can get you a job interview because somebody recommended you. It can get someone to take your phone call. It can make somebody willing to help you because they already know what kind of person you are.

And the opposite works just as fast.

Don’t show up. Don’t pay people. Lie. Make excuses. Screw people over.

Eventually your name starts walking into rooms before you do, too.

Just not in the way you want.

You can lose a job and get another one. You can lose money and make more.

But once people stop trusting your NAME, that can take YEARS to rebuild.

So protect it.

Because when you’re not standing in the room to explain yourself, your reputation is doing the talking for you.
